Joan Jett's real name is Joan Marie Larkin

She changed her name to Joan Jett, because she thought it had more of a rock-star sound than her birth name.

She took the stage name 'Joan Jett' from a Muddy Waters song called 'Bad Reputation.'

This name was suggested to her by drummer Sandy West, who thought it would fit well with the punk rock sound she had been working on.

She chose this particular nickname because it fit with what she saw as a rebellious nature of hers.

She has admitted in recent years that "Jett" was not actually her mother's maiden name, even though that is what she used to tell people

She changed her name just after her parents divorced.

So many people already knew her as “Joanie,” which some members of The Runaways called her.

She changed her last name to Jett and modeled her now-famous look of black leather, black eyeliner, and a black shag haircut
